Dearest Robert:

What a wonderful, heartfelt, kind and loving piece you've written!! Back then, in the early '80's, "It was the best of times, it was the worst of times," wasn't it? As a testament
to the latter, the friendships forged during those tumultous start-up years have been the best of my life.

When you were my boss, I remember you told me two things: (1.) It was your job to get me promoted, and (2.) It was also your job to get me an office with a window. Actually you told me a lot more than just those two things, but being somewhat superficial, I put those two at the top of the list. And thank you yes, you came through on both.

Didn't we work hard though? But boy, did we have fun!! Such intense fun. Joy really. (There was the fear part too. We each had so much responsibility. But we came through didn't we?)

Thank you again Robert for the wonderful memories. And for seeing that I had a great title and a great view. But what I treasure the most (truly) is your friendship.

Sorry for the delay in responding; very poor account weenie tradecraft on my part. Apologies.

If this post were directed at clients, I would agree the audience is them. But this really is meant to start a discussion between creatives and account people. Clients don't figure in an equation where account people are seeking respect from their creative counterparts, which is what I think you (sort of) acknowledge in your comment.

I actually take issue with your closing that it doesn't matter what you think, it only matters what the writers think. In this business I think it actually only matters what the client thinks...or what the client's customers and potential customers think. I'm admittedly a client-type so my objectivity can be fairly questioned.

There are too many writers who fall in love with their own idea, regardless if it's on strategy or not. In fact, you and I have both seen writers try to bend the strategy to fit their idea or just shove the idea down the client's throat.

Your advice to create a sense of partnership between account people and writers is spot on. A good account person will be more than a liaison with the client--they can be an advocate for good work, an early warning system for work that misses the mark and a constant resource to keep the creatives being appropriately creative.

I agree Robert. I have found in my career that even
sometimes what I know came second, had I not known the person that was recruiting me or making an introduction to a client I would not have the opportunity to showcase what I know. It pays to network all the time.

On the whole I agree. My one quibble is with the word "brand," which was borrowed by advertisers from the cattle industry back in the dawn of major media (when radio took off, during The Depression, and "branding" consisted of putting one kind of soap in five different boxes and singing about the difference. As a journalist, I have a name and a reputation. I am not a "brand" and what I write is not a commodity, even if some of it shows up on magazine racks.

For what it's worth, I also think basic principles of journalism persist, regardless of the author or the publisher, and regardless of changing businesses and models.

Does Nokia Photos say "Sync Cancelled" ? If so, this a known issue on the phone side. Firmware upgrade or resetting factory settings might help.

When I open Nokia Photos and try to sync, the same thing happens as before: no files are synchronized. I have now 52 captured items on my N97. I updated the device software today, as well as the Ovi suite on my PC. I couldn't find the path to the Windows Event log (my PC runs Microsoft Windows Vista 6.0 Suomi).

Have a look at Basecamp (http://basecamphq.com/). Not open source but a simple hosted application that quite many people seem to be using. You can get a free account that has some limitations and if you like it then you can pay for it. The downside is that time tracking is only available in the versions you have to pay for... There is a 30 day trial though.

I guess you can do the same with Excel or Google Apps if you want and I'm sure there's plenty of other apps for that purpose as well.

It's been a month and two days now, and I have NOT received a response from Nokia to the question I submitted on the Nokia Ovi website to Nokia Ovi sync support (!)
